The Fab City Foundation has confirmed that the 2027 Fab City Summit will be hosted by Oulu, Finland. The announcement was made at the close of the 2026 Summit in Boston. Oulu — Finland's fifth-largest city, situated just south of the Arctic Circle — will become the northernmost city ever to host the annual gathering of the global Fab City network.

The choice is deliberate. Oulu has been a Fab City since 2024 and has developed a distinctive approach to the challenge — one shaped by extreme climate, long winters, and a strong tradition of open innovation rooted in its history as a Nokia engineering hub. The city has invested heavily in circular construction, local energy production, and community-scale digital fabrication.

Why Oulu matters

Hosting the Summit in a Nordic city at 65 degrees north sends a clear signal: the Fab City challenge is not a warm-climate, Global South, or tech-hub story. It is a universal one. Cities at the edge of habitability — facing resource scarcity, extreme seasonality, and the need to produce locally out of necessity rather than ideology — have as much to teach the network as its founding European nodes.

Oulu's work on bio-based insulation materials, local food production under artificial light, and community repair culture in extreme conditions is directly relevant to cities facing very different but equally pressing constraints — including Cape Town, where water scarcity, energy insecurity, and the need for local economic resilience are not abstract concerns.

What Cape Town will bring

Cape Town's pledge was made in Boston with the expectation of showing up in Oulu with real work to report. That gives us roughly twelve months to move from declaration to demonstration. The ARC Observatory, the open sensing network, the circular textiles programme, and the library-as-makerspace model are all in development. By July 2027, we intend to have at least one of them producing data, objects, or outcomes that can be shared with the global network.

The Summit in Oulu will also be an opportunity to deepen the African presence in the network. We hope to travel with partners from across the continent — and to make the case that the Global South has not just lessons to learn from the Fab City model, but lessons to teach it.

"Oulu in winter is a reminder that local production is not a lifestyle choice. It is a survival strategy."
